In brief: Paraguay announces subsidies for border workers
* Paraguay’s finance minister, Óscar Llamosas, has announced that funds amounting to some US$10m will go towards subsidies for workers and traders whose income has been affected by border closures due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic in 16 cities which border Argentina. The minister estimates that the money will be divided among approximately 43,000 formal and informal workers, depending on the number of people who sign up to the programme between 8-10 April. According to Llamosas the amount allocated for the subsidies comes from the government’s 2020 'Pytyvõ' subsidy programme which was put in place during the pandemic’s first wave. The government will make four payments equating to 50% of the minimum wage each for formal workers (equivalent to G$1.096m or US$170), and two payments of G$500,000 each for informal workers. Llamosas has not ruled out further payments for informal workers, but said that they will depend on available resources.
