In brief: Brazilian government launches week of tenders

* The Brazilian government has launched the so-called ‘InfraWeek’ of tenders, during which it hopes to attract R$10bn (US$1.79bn) in investments for the concessions of 22 airports, five port terminals, and one railway line. Infrastructure Minister Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas has said that although the tenders “contribute...to the state’s fiscal efforts”, the primary objective is not income generation for the state, but “the generation of investments, because with investments, jobs will come”. The tenders begin today (7 April) with the auction for the 30-year concession for 22 airports divided up into three blocs which, under non-coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic circumstances, process around 11% of Brazil’s air passenger traffic. The airport tender is expected to attract R$6bn in investments.
