In brief: Brazil’s trade surplus decreases in Q1

* Brazil’s economy ministry has released the latest figures on the balance of trade, which show that the country recorded a US$1.65bn trade surplus in the first quarter of the year, a 62.5% reduction on the trade surplus recorded in Q1 2020. Overall, Brazil’s balance of trade increased 20.6% to US$109.62bn in Q1 2021, with exports growing 16.8% to US$55.63bn and imports increasing 24.8% to US$53.99bn. For the month of March alone, the trade surplus totalled US$1.48bn, a 63% decrease compared with March 2020, while the balance of trade for that month grew 38.3% year-on-year to US$47.53bn.
