* Colombia’s national statistics department (Dane) has reported that the national unemployment rate reached 15.9% in February. This rate is 3.7 percentage points higher than the 12.2% unemployment rate registered in February 2020 and continues a rising trend that has been observed since the onset of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic last year. A Dane report calculates that 1.2m jobs were lost in the last 12 months, with 22m employed in February 2020 compared to 20.8m employed in February 2021. Meanwhile the number of unemployed (those of working age that are seeking employment) has increased by 886,000 to 3.9m, while those that have abandoned the labour market (are not currently seeking employment) has increased by 801,000. Nevertheless, Dane Director
Juan Daniel Oviedo has pointed out that the increase in unemployed individuals is the lowest since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, suggesting an incipient recovery of the labour market.
