In brief: Cuba shores up economic ties with Russia

*Government delegations from Cuba and Russia have begun a two-day meeting, the XVIII session of the Cuba-Russia inter-governmental committee, in Cuba’s capital, Havana. The meeting aims to firm up bilateral ties in the areas of the economy, trade, science, and technology. The delegations were headed up by Cuba’s deputy prime minister, Ricardo Cabrisas, and his Russian counterpart, Yuri Borisov. According to a press release by Cuba's foreign ministry (Minrex), the two delegations are examining “aspects of mutual interest” in the areas of the economy, finance, energy, transport, agriculture, communications, and health, among others. According to Minrex, this session of the inter-governmental committee “demonstrates the interest in strengthening economic relations and collaboration, which will be evidenced during two days of intense exchange based on respect, trust, and transparency”.
