In brief: Argentina’s unemployment rate remains in double digits

*Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has released its latest employment figures, which show that the national unemployment rate reached 11% in the fourth quarter of 2020. This is higher than the 8.9% rate recorded in the same quarter of 2019. But Indec highlighted that it is marginally lower than the 11.7% rate posted in the third quarter of 2020 and substantially lower than the 13.1% rate observed in the second quarter of 2020, when Argentina was under a strict national lockdown designed to contain the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19). In this sense, Indec says that the latest figures reflect a recovery of the domestic labour market, with the employment rate reaching 40.1% in Q4 2020, the highest figure for that year. However, this still means that some 1.5m jobseekers remain unemployed in the country.
