Luis Abinader has announced a tourism initiative worth over US$1bn for the town of Miches, El Seibo province, which would include the construction of 4,551 hotel and residential rooms, with private investment. According to the government, the project – which will include involvement from “big business leaders, both local and foreign, in the tourism sector” - will generate over 9,000 direct and indirect jobs and approximately 5,000 new jobs once the initiative is operational. The announcement is the latest bid to revive the country’s crucial tourism sector, which accounted for 10.3% of domestic GDP in 2019 on figures from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), but has been badly hit by the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. A total of 2.7m tourists visited the Dominican Republic via air travel in 2020, down 62% on the previous year. End of preview - This article contains approximately 148 words.
