EL SALVADOR: Scale of Bukele’s victory confirmed

El Salvador’s supreme electoral tribunal (TSE) has released final results from the 28 February legislative elections which confirm that President Nayib Bukele’s Nuevas Ideas (NI) party will have an unprecedented two-thirds majority in the new 84-member national assembly which takes up its seats in May. In response to concerns about his perceived authoritarianism, which have emerged over incidents like his deployment of security forces to congress last year, attacks on press freedom, and repeated disregard for supreme court (CSJ) rulings, Bukele tweeted that El Salvador “will not become a dictatorship as some activists, analysts, ‘journalists’ and…politicians would have you believe”. He has similarly sought to provide reassurance over the integrity of the new legislators, which has already come under question.
