A tough stance on migration

Chilean authorities oversaw the largest single expulsion of undocumented migrants in the country on 10 February, deporting 86 Venezuelans and Colombians by air and 52 Peruvians and Bolivians by land from the city of Iquique in the northern Tarapacá Region, which borders Bolivia. Interior Minister Rodrigo Delgado said that these deportations would serve as a warning to any immigrants planning to enter Chile clandestinely – a sign of the government led by President Sebastián Piñera further toughening its approach to immigration as northern Chile has seen an influx of people crossing the border in recent weeks.
