Cuba: On 9 March, US White House press secretary Jen Psaki said a policy shift on Cuba is not an immediate priority for President Joe Biden. Psaki did confirm that the Biden administration would review the decision by former president, Donald Trump (2017-2021) to designate Cuba as a State Sponsor of Terrorism (SST) but stopped short of advocating for a softer approach as seen under his predecessor, Barack Obama (2009-2017), who oversaw an historic rapprochement with Cuba. Psaki explained that Biden’s Cuba policy will be determined by “support for democracy and human rights” and empowering the Cuban people “to determine their own futures”. Psaki also said that “Americans, especially Cuban Americans, are the best ambassadors for freedom and prosperity in Cuba”. Psaki said the US government is committed to reviewing the decision to add Cuba to the SST list but confirmed that “a Cuba policy shift is not currently among President Biden’s top priorities, but we are committed to making human rights a core pillar of our US policy”.
