“The right only beat us in Santa Cruz,” former president Evo Morales (2006-2019) boasted after Bolivia’s regional and municipal elections on 7 March. While the opposition did indeed win the governorship of the eastern department of Santa Cruz handily, what Morales did not mention is that the ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS), of which he is president, only won in three departments: Cochabamba, Potosí, and Oruro. The MAS should win more after a second round in others on 11 April. But it looks like falling short of Morales’ objective of winning seven of Bolivia’s nine governorships. It will also be hard-pressed to meet his target of taking at least 300 of the 337 mayoralties being contested, especially with a clear majority of the departmental capitals going to the opposition.End of preview - This article contains approximately 710 words.
