In brief: Mexico’s international tourism still far below pre-pandemic levels

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has reported that Mexico received 49.3% fewer international tourists year-on-year in January 2021, with numbers falling from 3.8m to 1.9m due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Arrivals via air saw the biggest hit, decreasing by 62.7% compared with the previous year. Mexico also saw its foreign exchange earnings through tourism plunge, with total spending from international tourists falling 59.1% from US$2.28bn in January 2020 to US$842m this January. Despite these negative year-on-year figures, they are an improvement on last year, when international arrivals fell by around 75% in May and were still over 60% below 2019 figures in July and August, suggesting signs of a slow recovery.
