In brief: DR’s Abinader announces potable water plan

* The Dominican Republic’s President Luis Abinader has announced plans to guarantee that US$8.85bn will go on providing potable water to all households and ensuring clean rivers. Abinader said that the initiative proposes spending 0.6% of GDP on average a year over the next 15 years and that he had discussed the plan with the World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank, who have provided “guarantees of support” for its immediate start. President Abinader, who took office last August, also said he would create a water cabinet to guarantee better efficiency in the use and management of water. As part of efforts to guarantee water supply, he revealed plans to accelerate the construction of existing dam projects, citing as examples Monte Grande, which is being built in the southwestern province of Barahona; Guayubín in Montecristi province; and Alto Yuna on the Yuna river, which would supply the metropolitan area of the capital, Gran Santo Domingo.
