ECUADOR: Indigenous fight on as Pérez defeat confirmed

Yaku Pérez is determined to go down fighting for what he sees as his legitimate place in the second round of Ecuador’s presidential elections on 11 April. The candidate for the indigenous movement Pachakutik arrived in Quito on 23 February at the head of a ‘march for transparency and democracy’, denouncing “structural fraud”, which he claimed had been planned “before [the first round on] 7 February”, and demanding a full recount. The national electoral council (CNE) published official results on 21 February declaring that Guillermo Lasso, a former banker and centre-right candidate, had beaten Pérez to second place by a slender margin of 33,600 votes and would face Andrés Arauz, the leftist acolyte of former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017), in the run-off.
