EL SALVADOR: Deputies debate unseating Bukele

Political tensions are riding very high in El Salvador just over two weeks ahead of crucial legislative elections. Against the backdrop of the worst political violence in a generation [WR-21-05], opposition deputies marked the first anniversary of President Nayib Bukele’s decision to march into congress at the head of the military in an act of authoritarian intimidation by weighing up whether or not to remove him from power. A deputy representing the right-wing opposition Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) urged fellow lawmakers to trigger Article 131 of the constitution to evaluate Bukele’s mental capacity to govern. Bukele swiftly denounced “an attempted parliamentary coup”.
