Chile’s Carabineros in the eye of the storm again

Flames engulfed a dozen public buildings in a municipality in southern Chile on 6 February as protesters vented their anger at the Carabineros militarised police over the killing of a popular street juggler. Calls for an urgent overhaul of the Carabineros are intensifying. President Sebastián Piñera was once again forced to defend the Carabineros, but many more incidents like this and public opinion could shift towards a radical reform, or even dissolution, of the force when delegates are elected to draft a new constitution on 11 April.
