COLOMBIA: Duque seeks to set the agenda

In recent weeks, Colombia’s President Iván Duque has faced growing criticism over his government’s failure to tackle the problem of escalating violence in the country, or to implement proper protections for those hit hardest [WR-21-04]. Duque this week responded to the questioning of his security strategy by seeking to reassert his authority in this arena, pledging decisive action to bring peace to Colombia. His plan for achieving this, however, remains centred on military solutions, a strategy that critics have repeatedly warned will only exacerbate the situation.
