In brief: Brazil’s inflation slows in January
* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released figures for the consumer price index (IPCA) for January, which show monthly inflation totalled 0.25%. This is down from 1.35% monthly inflation in December 2020, and brings inflation in the 12 months to January to 4.56% – above the 4.52% annual inflation recorded in 2020. The food and drink category continues to drive prices up as the category with the biggest price increase in January (1.02%), which was balanced out by a fall in prices for electricity and airline tickets, according to the Ibge. The central bank (BCB) has set a target of 3.75% for inflation this year, with a margin of +/-1.5 percentage points.
