CHILE: Mapuche conflict deepens despite conviction in Catrillanca case

The shooting of an indigenous Mapuche youth during an operation by the Carabineros militarised police in November 2018, and the attempt by those involved to cover up the crime, shook Chile, prompting protests across the country, renewed unrest in the southern La Araucanía region where the killing took place, and a scandal for the Carabineros [SSR-19-01]. Over two years on, justice has finally been served, with seven Carabineros officers being convicted in the case, one of whom for the murder of Camilo Catrillanca. Hailed as an important step forward in the fight against police abuses and for indigenous rights, the convictions nevertheless come at a time of violence and instability between the Mapuche and the authorities.
