HONDURAS: Hernández faces fresh drug allegations

Three opposition deputies last week filed a request before congress calling for President Juan Orlando Hernández to be impeached and removed from office. The request follows fresh incendiary claims by US prosecutors that Hernández had received bribes from drug traffickers and helped ship cocaine to the US. Such allegations are nothing new and already emerged in relation to the case involving his brother Juan ‘Tony’ Antonio Hernández, a former legislator for the ruling Partido Nacional (PN), convicted in October 2019 by a US court for drug trafficking, weapons offences, and false statements [WR-19-45]. However, such claims could prove damaging to the PN ahead of the November general elections (in which President Hernández is constitutionally barred from seeking a further term). Some consider that the change in US administration which took place on 20 January could also make things more difficult for Hernández.
