In brief: Central bank report reveals pandemic impact on tourism in DR

* The Dominican Republic’s central bank (BCRD) has released a new report which shows that 2.4m tourists (defined as foreign nationals and non-resident Dominicans) visited the country via air travel in 2020, a 62.7% drop on 2019. The decline was explained by measures taken to stop the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. However, the BCRD did point to signs of recovery, claiming that the total number of tourists to visit the country via air in December 2020 (368,464) was the highest since the reopening of airports in July.
