MEXICO: López Obrador faces off with INE

Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has accused the country’s national electoral institute (INE) of trying to censor him for suggesting that the broadcasting of his daily morning press briefings should be suspended during the official campaign period leading up to the June midterm elections. The INE argues that the so-called ‘mañaneras’ can be considered a form of government propaganda and that, under electoral law, the dissemination of such propaganda is not permitted during electoral campaigns. But López Obrador insists that his freedom of speech should not be curtailed and that he is prepared to go to court over the matter. The clash could prove to be damaging for Mexico’s institutions and this year’s electoral process.
