In brief: ICT reveals pandemic impact on Costa Rica’s tourism sector

* Costa Rica’s tourism institute (ICT), a government body, has released new figures which show that just 1.01m international tourists visited Costa Rica in 2020, a third of the more than 3m who visited the country in 2019. The slump stems from restrictions imposed at home and around the world to stop the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Nonetheless the ICT highlights that in December 2020, 71,000 travellers arrived in Costa Rica via air, double that registered the previous month as restrictions were lifted and 20 market-leading airlines resumed flights. Yet Tourism Minister Gustavo Segura stressed that numbers for Costa Rica, which had its borders open for just seven months of 2020 due to the pandemic, are not too negative compared to some other countries across the globe which saw tourism plummet to just 5% of previous levels.
