Migrant deaths highlight growing danger

The 33 people killed in a shipwreck off the coast of Venezuela in December were by no means the first to lose their lives while fleeing the country in recent years. The scale of this disaster, however, has drawn considerable international attention to a well-travelled but often-neglected escape route – the dangerous 50-mile crossing between Venezuela and the island of Trinidad.
