NICARAGUA: Opposition denounces new attempt to obstruct electoral participation

“Another step…moving the country further away from the rule of law”. This was the response by the High Representative for foreign affairs for the European Union (EU), Josep Borrell, to a new bill passed at the end of December by Nicaragua’s legislature controlled by the ruling Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN). The opposition, the EU, and other members of the international community warn that the new law seeks to prevent opposition candidacies ahead of the November 2021 general election in which President Daniel Ortega is seeking a further term. They maintain that it is the latest attempt by the government to muzzle the opposition ahead of the vote.
