Brazil breaks its own macabre record in murders

Each day in 2017, 175 people were murdered in Brazil, which means that 63,880 people died violently last year. The numbers come from the independent local organisation Fórum Brasileiro de Segurança Pública (Fórum) and raised alarm as it reveals the country had a record number of homicides last year and a murder rate that went from 29.9 per 100,000 people in 2016 to 30.8 in 2017, a 3.7% increase. The 2017 figures are the highest in the Fórum’s historical index, which began in 2013.
