Vaca Muerta – Argentina’s dream of being a global energy provider

According to a 2013 US Department of Energy report, Argentina has the second-largest estimated recoverable reserves of unconventional, or shale, gas in the world, surpassed only by China. Argentina’s major shale hydrocarbon deposit and where the government led by President Mauricio Macri has focused its investments and efforts is the ‘Vaca Muerta’ deposit, located mainly in the southern Neuquén province, although the deposit also stretches to the contiguous provinces of Mendoza and Río Negro. The 30,000km2 deposit is located in the Neuquén Basin, a traditional oil producing area in the country.
