In brief: Bolivia

* Bolivia’s President Evo Morales has promulgated a new law on ethanol – marking Bolivia’s official entry into the production of biofuels as part of efforts to substitute gasoline imports. Also related, on 14 September the Unagro Corporation, a business conglomerate with several undertakings and productive investments in Bolivia, inaugurated a sugar cane processing plant capable of producing 300,000 litres of ethanol a day. The plant was built with a US$15m investment. In a presidential press release announcing the promulgation of the new law, President Morales said that, with the production of ethanol, gasoline subsidies would be reduced by US$20m annually.
