In brief: Brazil

* Authorities say that hostility towards Venezuelan migrants has increased and tensions have risen again in Brazil’s northern state of Roraima after a group of locals in Boa Vista, the state capital, killed a Venezuelan suspected of having beaten to death a Brazilian national. Fearing repercussions, nearly 200 Venezuelan refugees crossed the border back into Venezuela over the weekend (8-9 September) in buses organised by local NGOs with the support of the Venezuelan authorities. Following violent incidents in the border town of Pacaraima at the end of August, the Brazilian army was deployed to reinforce security in the area, and the Brazilian government has sped up the re-localisation of Venezuelan migrants to other states within Brazil.
