In brief: Mexico

*Ascensión Medina Nieves, the president of Mexico’s college of civil engineers (CICM), has said that after carefully evaluating the two proposals to build a new international airport for Mexico City presented to it by President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s government transition team, the CICM considers that the project to build a completely new airport (NAICM) is the best option. The US$13.3bn NAICM project is already under construction after being launched by the outgoing government led by President Enrique Peña Nieto. However, López Obrador has been critical of the project, saying that it does not represent value for money, and instead has proposed scrapping it and expanding the existing Santa Lucía military airbase and it turning into a new civil airport, which López Obrador argues would be more cost effective. In the face of private sector support for the NAICM project, López Obrador said that his administration will hold a public consultation on whether to continue developing the NAICM or the Santa Lucía project. As part of this the López Obrador transition team submitted the two project proposals to the CICM back in August and asked it to come up with a technical evaluation. Medina said that after evaluating the information provided CICM members have concluded that the NAICM is the “most feasible, viable, and reliable solution”.
