CHILE: Museums at centre of political struggle
Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera announced his government’s intention this week to create a ‘museum of democracy’. The gestation of the idea dates back to July 2017 but the timing of the announcement was eye-catching. Less than a week earlier, Piñera’s culture minister, Mauricio Rojas, resigned after just four days in the job after facing scathing criticism for past remarks about the museum of memory and human rights in Santiago [WR-18-32].
