In brief: Mexico

* Javier Jiménez Espriú, Mexico’s President-elect Manuel López Obrador’s designated transport & communications minister, has announced that the release of a feasibility study for the controversial new international airport for Mexico City (NAICM) project has been delayed by 24 hours. Jiménez Espriú said that he will now present the document to López Obrador on 16 August after receiving information from an unnamed international civil aviation organisation relating to some of the aeronautics and security details included in the feasibility report in the early hours of the morning. López Obrador will inform the public of his position on the US$13bn construction project at a press conference scheduled for 17 August amid calls for clarity on the future of the airport from members of the federal congress. According to Eduardo Ramírez, president of Mexico’s construction industry chamber (CMIC), its members have already signed 209 contracts related to NAICM, and Ramírez said that the project needs to continue “for the good of the country”. While López Obrador could cancel or delay the project after he assumes office on 1 December, Moody’s Investor Serivce, the international credit ratings agency, has predicted that it is more likely that López Obrador will insist on more private-sector funding instead of state funding for the project.
