Looking to build consensus on energy policy

The emergence of various social and environmental movements, notably the ‘Patagonia sin represas’ movement, have led to the creation of government institutions that seek to strengthen environmental justice in Chile. Several environmental NGOs consider, however, that public participation in the approval process of infrastructure megaprojects is lacking, notably for energy and mining projects. The reforms creating the new government institutions were rolled out in 2010. They seek to allow greater public participation and in so doing create a broader consensus for projects that will reduce Chile’s dependence on non-renewable energy sources.
