In brief: Mexico

*  President Enrique Peña Nieto announced on Twitter that more jobs were created during his six-year term than during the two previous presidential terms combined. Mexico’s social security institute (IMSS) recorded the creation of 54,669 new formal jobs in July. This is the biggest increase in employment recorded in July in the last decade, and it brings the total number of jobs created since President Peña Nieto took office in December 2012 up to nearly 3.7 million, with 86% of these being permanent positions. “More and more Mexicans are enjoying the benefits of formal employment” the outgoing president wrote on Twitter. Peña Nieto will end his term later this year when President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador takes office on 1 December.
