Brazil: On 31 July-1 August US Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Admiral John Richardson visited Brazil, where he met with Brazil’s navy leadership to discuss deepening the US-Brazil naval partnership. According to an official US press release CNO Richardson also met with his Brazilian counterpart, Admiral Eduardo Bacellar Leal Ferreira, commander of the Brazilian navy, to “seek opportunities to expand their naval partnership and increase interoperability through officer exchange programmes and combined operations”. CNO Richardson also spent time with Brazil's First Naval District Command aboard the multipurpose amphibious ship (NDM) ‘Bahia’. According to a press release by the US Navy, the visit is part of a series of engagements in South America, beginning with the Inter-American Naval Conference (IANC) in Colombia, where 18 naval commanders met to discuss strengthening partnerships and increasing maritime cooperation.
