In brief: Venezuela

Venezuela: Political opposition party Primero Justicia (PJ) has denounced that agents from the state intelligence service (Sebin) have arrested PJ national deputy Juan Requesens. The compliant comes after President Nicolás Maduro accused Requesens and fellow PJ national deputy and president of the national assembly (AN), Julio Borges, of being the masterminds behind the 4 August explosion of two drones during a military parade in Caracas attended by Maduro, which his government believes was an assassination attempt targeting Maduro. The Maduro government has said that it has evidence that the attack was carried out by Venezuelan opposition groups backed by right-wing groups in Colombia and the US. But the opposition in Venezuela has denied any involvement in the incident and has warned that it could have been staged as an excuse to arrest some of its leaders. Requesens’ apparent arrest came as the government-controlled national constituent assembly (ANC) began debating the removal of the parliamentary immunity of any opposition legislators linked to the suspected assassination attempt.
