Paraguay’s Abdo Benítez visits US

Guatemala: On 27 July US Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Carl Risch met Guatemala’s deputy foreign minister, Pablo García Sáenz, to discuss the reunification of irregular migrant families separated at the Mexico-US border. During the private meeting, García Sáenz reportedly asked Risch for information on current cases of separated families and also requested that the Guatemalan government be updated as more details emerge. The US government is in the process of reuniting children with their parents after having separated them at the border. As well as discussing the reunification of children and their families, during the meeting Risch reportedly emphasised the importance of warning the public about the dangers of illegal immigration and the risks faced by people who contact ‘coyotes’ (guides for would-be illegal immigrants to the US) and human traffickers. The meeting took place during a tour that Risch carried out to Central America’s so-called ‘Northern Triangle’ countries (El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala) with the principle aim of “deterring and reducing illegal immigration”.
