In brief: Chile

Chile: Sindicato Escondida 1, the union representing miners from ‘Escondida’, the world’s largest copper mine (which is majority owned by Australia-based mining company BHP Billiton), has voted overwhelmingly against the latest remuneration package offered by BHP.  Of the estimated 2,300 votes cast in an internal vote by the union, 1,955 workers rejected the company’s offer, while 370 accepted the package. On its Twitter account, the union made it clear that there would be strike actions if BHP did not promptly change its position. BHP’s latest offer is for a 1% salary increase and a signing bonus of roughly US$18,000 among other things. The union, however, has demanded a 5% salary increase and a US$40,100 signing bonus. The trade union has given BHP until 6 August to make a new offer, threatening to take strike action if the company fails to change its position.
