In brief: Brazil

*Brazil’s federal energy & mining ministry (MME) has authorised the construction of a second natural gas-fuelled thermoelectric electricity production plant at the Porto do Açu complex in Rio de Janeiro state. The building of the new plant will add MW1,300 installed production capacity to the complex owned by the Gas Natural Açu (GNA) consortium made up of Brazilian firm Prumo Logística and multinationals BP and Siemens, making it the largest thermoelectric electricity production park in Latin America with a total capacity of 3,000MW, according to a statement by GNA. Prumo Logística CEO, José Magela, said that the firm plans to invest R$8bn (US$2.1bn) in the construction of the new plant as well as a new liquified natural gas regasification plant in the complex, with the capacity to process 21m cubic metres of natural gas to help fuel the new plant, which is slated to come on stream by 2023.
