* Local civil-society group Asamblea Nacional de Usuarios de la Energía Eléctrica (Anuee), which represents over 70,000 electricity users, has staged a demonstration in Mexico City in rejection of the entry of foreign firms into Mexico’s electricity generation and distribution market. Foreign firms have started entering Mexico’s electricity market after the 2013-2014 energy sector reform opened up the sector to increased private sector participation. However, Anuee argues that the mass arrival of foreign firms to a market that was previously dominated by the state-owned electricity firm, Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), would result in higher electricity tariffs for consumers as these firms strive to make a profit. Some 200 people took part in the demonstration, which consisted of a protest march to the embassies of Germany, Canada, Colombia, the US, Spain, France, and Japan - the home countries of firms that have entered Mexico’s electricity market since the reform.
