In brief: El Salvador

El Salvador: El Salvador’s civil protection agency has announced that the government has begun taking emergency measures in response to a month-long drought, declaring an orange alert in 12 of the country’s 14 departments and a red alert in 143 of the country’s 262 municipalities. These measures permit the government to use public funds to ensure food supplies and enable farmers to sow their crops again. A report by the agriculture ministry is warning that 62,089 manzanas (one manzana = 1.68 acres) of corn has so far been affected, of which 28,700 manzanas will be lost completely and 33,290, partially, affecting 77,322 producers. The ministry is still evaluating the possible impact on cattle, coffee, and other basic grains.
