In brief: Mexico

* The US has filed a complaint before the World Trade Organisation (WTO) against Mexico, as well as Canada, China, the European Union, and Turkey, for retaliatory tariffs imposed on US goods in response to US steel and aluminium tariffs. The US complaint argues that Mexico’s actions violate provisions of the WTO's General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) 1994. On 1 June the US imposed tariffs on Mexican steel and aluminium products which it justified for ‘national security’ reasons and, in response, Mexico increased duties on US-produced flat steel, pork, foodstuffs, among other products. The trade tensions between the two countries have complicated the ongoing process of renegotiation the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) between the US, Mexico and Canada, for which talks are set to resume on 26 July. By filing a complaint with the WTO, the US has requested dispute consultations with Mexico which is the first step in the WTO dispute resolution process. If consultations between the US and Mexico yield no outcome after 60 days, the US may request panel adjudication of its case.
