In brief: Argentina

Argentina: The national statistics institute (Indec) has released its latest inflation figures, which found that the monthly inflation rate increased by 3.7% from May to June, the highest monthly increase recorded so far this year. The June inflation figure is 29.5% higher than that registered in June 2017 and brings the accumulated inflation rate so far this year to 16% - already one percentage point above the official year-end inflation target of 15%. All of this is worrisome for the government led by President Mauricio Macri as it suggests that the inflation rate is once again accelerating rather than falling and that Argentina’s economic authorities will struggle to meet the 17% year-end 2019 inflation rate target set in the Stand-By Agreement that the Macri government has recently signed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
