In brief: Nicaragua

Nicaragua: The national dialogue process between the government led by President Daniel Ortega and the opposition, which has been mediated by Nicaragua’s Catholic Episcopal Conference (CEN) and aims to find a solution to the crisis which began mid-April, caused by the state crackdown on anti-government protesters, has again been suspended. This follows attacks by pro-government armed groups against bishops at the Basilica of San Sebastián in Diriamba municipality, Carazo department, which took place yesterday (9 July). Those attacked included Cardinal Leopoldo Brenes and Monsignor Silvio Báez (who have played a key role in the national dialogue process) and Apostolic Nuncio Stanislaw Waldemar Sommertag. Over the weekend (7-8 July) at least 17 people were killed in Matagalpa department, Diriamba, and Jinotepe municipality (Carazo department), most of them by police and pro-government armed groups in one of the bloodiest weekends since the crisis began.
