In brief: El Salvador

El Salvador: Students from El Salvador’s state-run Universidad de El Salvador (UES) and unionists have staged protests outside the national legislative assembly against the privatisation of water. The protests, which follow demonstrations which took place last month, come as the 84-member unicameral legislature is debating a bill, presented on 14 June 2017 by the four main opposition parties – Arena, Partido de Concertación Nacional (PCN), Gran Alianza por la Unidad Nacional (Gana), and Partido Demócrata Cristiano (PDC) - which they fear could pave the way for the privatisation of the country’s water resources. One of the bones of contention in the proposed initiative is a provision which would create an autonomous body to oversee the country’s water resources. This would have a five-member directorate to include one government representative, two from the association of municipal governments (Comures), and, controversially, two representatives from the private sector.
