In brief: Brazil

*Brazil’s national electric energy agency (Aneel), the electricity sector regulator, has announced that three different foreign firms have won nine of the 20 concessions to build and operate 21 new electricity transmission lines in the country during a public tender process, while the remaining concessions were awarded to local firms. According to an Aneel statement, 47 foreign and local firms took part in the tender process, but India’s Sterlite Power Grid Ventures, Colombia’s ISA, and China’s State Grid were the only foreign firms that won bids. Sterlite, which began operations in Brazil only in April, was the biggest winner after it was awarded six concessions, while ISA was awarded two and State Grid one. Aneel noted that the construction of the 21 new transmission lines, which will extend for 2,600km across 16 states, will require an investment of R$6bn (US$1.62bn) and will generate 13,600 direct jobs.
