In brief: Venezuela

Venezuela: The European Union (EU) has announced the imposition of new sanctions on 11 Venezuelan government officials for undermining democracy and the rule of law in Venezuela, including Delcy Rodríguez, the current vice president and former president of the national constituent assembly (ANC). Other prominent officials sanctioned include Tareck El Aissami, the former vice president and current industry & production minister, who doubles as vice president of the economy. The list also includes Elías Jaua, the minister of popular power for education, and senior members of the military, the national electoral council (CNE), and the attorney general’s office. The announcement of new sanctions brings the number of Venezuelan individuals on the EU sanctions list up to 18 and prohibits these individuals from traveling to the EU and freezes any assets they may hold in EU jurisdiction. The Venezuelan government responded to the new sanctions by condemning them as a “continuous assault” on Venezuela by the EU and the “flagrant subordination” of the union to the US government. However, the ongoing economic crisis in Venezuela derived from the country’s deep political crisis yesterday led President Nicolás Maduro to replace his health minister, Luis López. Faced with rolling strikes and protests by nurses and health sector workers in demand of better working conditions and improved salaries, President Maduro has named Carlos Alvarado as his new health minister.
