In brief: Brazil

* The joint command of Brazil’s armed forces has reported that a contingent of over 1,000 soldiers and police officers has launched a new security operation in Rocinha, the largest favela in the city of Rio de Janeiro, on 9 June. According to an official statement, the operation is part of the federal security intervention in Rio de Janeiro state ordered by the government led by President Michel Temer to help reinforce security in the state, which has been afflicted by a wave of organised crime related violence since last year. Rocinha is home to 120,000 people but it is considered to be one of Brazil’s most violent favelas, where criminal and drug trafficking organisations have long been fighting for control of the area.
