US formally requests Santrich’s extradition from Colombia

Brazil: On 4 June, US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert reported that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had met with Brazil’s Foreign Minister Aloysio Nunes Ferreira. According to a US State Department press release, Pompeo remarked on “the importance of our strong bilateral relationship and expressed appreciation for Brazil’s support in advancing mutual priorities in the region and globally”. The press release also cites Pompeo as reaffirming “the importance of the recent launch of the US-Brazil Permanent Forum on Security, our ongoing joint bilateral law enforcement initiative to address transnational crime”. During the meeting, the two officials also reportedly discussed how best to address the deteriorating situation in Venezuela, particularly following the 20 May presidential election, which many countries in the region claim lacked “credibility and legitimacy”.
