In brief: Venezuela

Venezuela: The Frente Amplio Venezuela Libre political opposition movement has called for new national protests to be staged on 8 June against the political, economic, and social crisis affecting the country, and to increase the pressure on the government led by President Nicolás Maduro to change its ways. The call for new protests came after the Maduro government announced the end of the release of imprisoned political dissidents, which the government had undertaken as a gesture to the opposition to try to convince it to establish a new political dialogue table. The government has released 79 prisoners since 1 June. However, opposition groups including the Frente Amplio Venezuela Libre complained that only 39 of the released were included in lists of those considered by them to be ‘political prisoners’ and that a further 400 people are being held as political prisoners. Frente Amplio Venezuela Libre has called on the public to demonstrate against the crisis in the country and “agitate” for a change in government, sparking fears that the demonstrations could end in violence.
